California's budget process is broken and needs to be fixed. However these hastily drafted propositions written behind closed doors do not address the problems we face. The club recommends voting no on all six propositions. May 19 Ballot Propositions - Club Endorses NO position on all 6 propositions At the April meeting, the club hosted an interesting and informative presentation concerning the pros and cons of the ballot propositions that we all will be voting on May 19. The three speakers were representatives from the nonpartisan League of Women Voters of California, California Teachers Union (Club member and Torrance Teachers Assn. president Julie Shankle spoke on their behalf), and the progressive political website Calitics. Following the discussion and a question and answer period, the club received endorsed the NO position on all 6 propositions (meaning more than 60% of clubmembers voting opposed each proposition). The vote seemed to reflect the sentiment that these budget propositions would not do anything to solve the 11-figure budget deficit that faces the state in just a couple years and would actually force spending lower than it already is, thanks to a permanent spending cap (Prop 1A). We need to focus on the problem: the conservative "veto" that Republicans in the legislature hold due to the rule that a 2/3 supermajority is needed to pass any tax increase or budget. The club recommends you vote NO on May 19. |
